We?re pleased to announce that the Spring 2012 Chesapeake SAPFM Regional Chapter meeting is open for registration. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 10:00AM - 3:00PM at the J. Gibson McIlvain Lumber Company located at 10701 Philadelphia Road in Perry Hall (White Marsh), Maryland, which is just off of I-95 about 5 miles North of the Baltimore I-695 Beltway. Plan to arrive by 9:45AM to register and get your coffee.
Pre-registration is required, so please RSVP to me at [email protected]. There will be a fee of $25.00 to cover meeting costs including lunch & refreshments which will be collected during sign-in (9:45-10:00) on the day of the meeting.
We have an exciting agenda planned with our featured speaker being Don Williams from the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute where Don is the Senior Furniture Conservator at the Smithsonian Institution?s Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE) near Washington DC. Don will be presenting and demonstrating Traditional Finishing for Today based on his years of training and practical experiences in finishing, restoration and preservation. Besides being a conservator of our nation's great treasures, he is a nationally known speaker, instructor, author and all around great guy who also builds furniture just so he can finish them.
In addition, Don Williams has agreed to host a tour of the Smithsonian Conservation Institute where he works on Tuesday, May 15th from 10:00AM-3:00PM at their Museum Support Center facilities in Suitland, MD which will provide a detailed, behind the scenes view of restoring and conserving our nations treasures. More details will be provided at the meeting along with a member registration. There will be a limit of 25 SAPFM members for this event given their space limitations. Lunch will be available for individual purchase from a local sandwich store. The tour is not a repeat of Don's presentation, but will be a broader view of the preservation and conservation of our historic treasures which is Don's expertise.
We will get things started sharply at 10:00AM with a walking tour of the 25 acre J Gibson McIlvain Lumber Company facilities provided by Shannon Rogers, our host and employee of the company. So arrive by 9:45am , register and get your coffee and be ready to go by 10:00am and bring your walking shoes and plan for a great insight into the hardwood lumber business.
Besides a very short business meeting, the agenda will include time for socializing, as well as one or two short topic discussions still under consideration along with lunch and refreshments. We will also have our regular member Show & Tell, and the Tool Exchange, so bring any completed or work-in-process projects, tools or jigs that would be of interest to your fellow and lady woodworkers or unused woodworking items that you would like to sell. Show & Tell will only work if members are willing to show off their work, so please consider bringing something to share with the rest of the group.
