Case front sliding dovetails

I think these dovetails look real good; but I've never made one because the grain of the case side is just all wrong for a front dovetail (no problem with dovetails on the tops and bottoms), and would potentially make for a very weak joint. But apparently they hold quite nicely, based on historical pieces since the 17th c. Why is this?
