CARVING CLASS

The Lone Star Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers held it's quarterly meeting on May 31 - June 1, 2008 at the new Woodcraft store located at 11707 West Sam Houston Parkway South in Houston, Texas.  Our instructor was Mary May from Charleston, South Carolina.  Mary is a professional carver who operates Charleston Wood & Stone Carving.  Check out her web-site at  www.marymaycarving.com   The focus of this intensive two day class was carving acanthus leaves and carving a 9" convex Newport shell.  This was a hands on class with everyone carving their own pieces. Mary is an excellent teacher and everyone who participated in the class gained extensive knowledge about her carving techniques.  Everyone also received individual instruction as needed.   The meeting was a huge success!

We were all so impressed by Mary's talent and teaching ability that we have invited her back for next year and she has agreed to come and teach another two day class in 2009.  We are all looking forward to 2009!

Special thanks go out to Woodcraft Supply for allowing us to use their classroom for our meeting, to Malcolm Granberry for setting up and guiding a private tour of the Bayou Bend furniture collection for Mary and her husband, Stephen, to Debi and Gerry Shoemaker for hosting Mary and Stephen in their beautiful home, and to Peach and Jim Thompson for having Mary and Stephen for supper on Sunday evening, and of course, to Mary May for traveling to Houston and teaching the class.  I sincerely thank all of you for helping make this event a huge success!  Your generosity is what makes our chapter work!
