Benches, we don't need no stinking benches

John, I wish! Thank you for the thought. In my dreams it was at least three weeks ago.
Actually this bench was made for a side porch for a home from Martinsburg, Virginia (then soon to be West Virginia) "Boydville"  It is one of my favorite Virginia pieces.

I am curious how the craftsmen of the day would have  made the curved pieces that support the top rail of the back as they appear to be a curved turning.

I can imagine three alternatives:

1. Turn as a straight piece and then steam bend

2. Turn the end section of a curved piece using some sort of offset center

3. Carved round

How did they do it ?
