UPDATED Announcement: Fall 2015 SAPFM Chesapeake Chapter Meeting
We have finalized details for our upcoming SAPFM meeting, which will feature a chevalet demonstration and French marquetry, Federal inlay techniques with Freddy Roman, and the usual show-and tell and socializing sessions. In addition, Freddy will lead a 3-day class teaching Federal embellishments on a hammer veneered panel. Read below for details on the meeting and the class.
Meeting Date: October 3, 2015
Location: The Woodworker’s Club, 11910-L Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD
Plan to Bring: (1) $25 to cover costs, and (2) Show & Tell item(s)
Check-in with coffee and donuts will begin at 9:00 a.m. The agenda for the day will be as follows:
9:30 – 10:00 Chapter Business
10:00 – 12:00 Member Spotlight
We’re introducing a new meeting segment that will highlight the abilities of chapter members. We have members with expertise in a variety of areas and will begin to feature them in our meetings (let Charlie and Mark know if you’re interested in presenting at a future spotlight segment). For this meeting, we will hear from two of our members:
• Wes Highfill (highfillcustomwoodworks.com) will demonstrate French marquetry construction with his chevalet and assembly board. Wes uses the Boulle technique (stack cutting) and a French assembly board for putting the marquetry together (he also uses the classical, pattern-cutting method and can demonstrate that too). If you’ve ever wanted to see a chevalet in action, don’t miss this session!
• Brian Landis will discuss his approach to shell inlay on curved surfaces. He will discuss specialized tool setup and describe his evolution through different techniques and glues.
12:00 – 1:00 Show & Tell / Lunch
Please bring in your recently-completed projects to show off, and describe the most interesting or challenging aspects of the build. Show & Tell will only work if members are willing to show off their work, so please consider bringing something to share with the rest of the group.
1:00 – 5:00 Featured Presenter
Freddy Roman will join us to give the featured presentation to our Chapter meeting. Freddy apprenticed under master craftsman Philip C. Lowe at the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts. After graduating Freddy has worked for conservation studios and cabinet shops restoring furniture, making architectural elements, doing upholstery, and reproducing museum quality furniture. He currently has a shop in Littleton, MA with SAPFM Cartouche Award recipient Will Neptune. Freddy specializes in custom Federal furniture-making and antique restoration, with a particular focus on veneering and inlaying. He makes intricate custom banding that he sells and uses in his own work.
In his talk to us, Freddy will discuss:
• His experience at the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts learning under Phil Lowe,
• Furniture repair and restoration (what is the value in doing this work, how has it informed him in building reproductions, how has it contributed to his business (useful info for our professional members).
• Veneer: what makes a suitable veneer for reproduction? (thickness, species, figure, etc.
• Substrate: why does he go to the effort to make a quarter-sawn panel and eschew plywood or MDF.
• Demonstration: provide a brief overview of the 3-day class that Freddy will have just completed at The Woodworker’s Club (i.e., inlaying an oval, or hammer veneering a panel).
• Describe/demonstrate techniques used to make period-correct banding, with examples and comparison to commercial products available to us today.
We have also partnered with Freddy and The Woodworker’s Club to offer an intensive hands on class in period furniture techniques in the 3 days preceding our meeting: Wednesday September 30th – Friday October 2nd, 2015. In this class Freddy will lead you through the skills and techniques to build a Federal/Neoclassical style hammer-veneered panel featuring cross-banding, mitered field, ellipse inlay, and stringing. Learn hot hide glue methods to build a veneered panel, with elements commonly found on a Federal card table apron, legs, and top. The class is limited to 10 students and we believe the class will fill up fast, and we want SAPFM members to get first crack at the registration, so be sure to follow that link if you’re interested.

We also allow first-time guests to attend chapter meetings, so please forward to any prospective members you may know. We will also have our regular Tool Exchange, so bring any woodworking tools that you no longer use.

PS: Other activities in the planning stage: Visit to Hershey, PA museum to view/measure period pieces; Group tour of Annapolis, MD historic mansion; group lumber purchase. Our spring meeting is planned and will be announced immediately after the fall meeting concludes.
