    Desk dimension issue

Thank you Dennis. Here's a photo of the door on this desk. I scaled the photograph and the dimensions I get from that exercise suggest that the distance from the top of the rail to the top of the arc is 2.5 inches, not 2 inches.

    Lonnie Bird desk measurement problem

Thank you Mark. Here's a photo of the door as made by someone else, with lines and dimensions obtained by scaling the photo, based on a height of the upper rail of 5.5 inches. That leaves about 2.5 inches at the top of the arch but if I follow Bird's measured drawings I'll end up with 2...

    Desk dimension issue

I am building the Secretary desk from FWW issues 154 to 156 and am stuck on a door detail, the large tombstone doors on the top part. The diagram shows the upper rail to be 5 1/2 inches wide. The arc is to be 4 inches radius, offset 1/2 inch below the bottom of the upper rail. That would...

    Nitrocellulose problem

I am applying a finish on a curly maple corner cupboard.  I have used this method on various project for many years .  Water based aniline dye stain, followed by one coat of BLO, then several coats of shellac followed by one coat of low luster Nitrocellulose lacquer to kill the shine of the...

    low back windsor chair

Some years ago there was a magazine article, I believe it was in FWW, on the building of a low back windsor chair with a sawed as opposed to steam bent arm.  I have the full FWW index on disk. I can't find anything on the disk about this chair, yet I seem to clearly remember such an article...

    delete post

I wish to delete one of my posts as I've figured out the solution.  There doesn't appear to be a 'delete' key, only a 'modify post' key.  Please advise how to accomplish this. Thanks, Herman

    Pad-foot leg

I just made a Pad-foot leg in the conventional manner as described in various sources such as FWW and Norm Vandal's book.  Using this method produces a foot the same diameter as the square post at the top, in my case 1 3/4 inches. While at Williamsburg recently I noticed two tables, one in the...

    Ball and Ball

I'm wondering if something is wrong at Ball and Ball. More than a month ago I ordered a catch which has not yet arrived.  3 emails to two different individuals there have gone unanswered.  Herman

Looking for plans for a Queen Anne side chair

I've looked through all my books and the web and can't find a plan for a Queen Anne side chair similar to the one by David Beach as seen in the member's projects.  See picture below. Anyone know of a source for this?  I checked the 'tools for working wood' web site but the version they offer...

    Twist in air dried cherry

I just brought home 200bf of air dried cherry, some of which had twisted during the past year due to being stacked incorrectly even though it was stickered.  I was cut in July of 2009. The thickness is just under 5/4., lengths average 6 to 7 feet, widths 10 to 13 inches. Does anyone have any...

    veneer repair part deux

Having fixed the top I'm now on to replacing a 10X2 inch area of veneer on one of the drawers.  A long time ago someone replaced a missing triangle near a corner with the wrong veneer which I successfully removed with heat.  The veneer on the drawer front is mahogany by the way. Over the years...

    veneer repair

I've been asked to repair a ca. 1790 5 drawer chest. The top is mahogany veneer over an as yet unknown substrate.  The veneer in an area of about 8X10 inches has lifted and buckled quite badly and needs to be put back down.  The veneer does not appear to be broken, just a very large blister...

    Back saw manufacturer

I'm about to restore an old back saw. The name 'Millard Bros Warranted' is stamped into the steel back.  Has anyone ever heard of this brand and if so is it anything special? Thanks, Herman

    rabbet plane blade width

I picked up an Anant rabbet plane recently, knowing I'd have to do a bit of fettling to get the thing to work. The blade on the plane is actually wider than the plane body.  If my thinking is correct, the blade should be the same width as the plane body. Am I right?

    Rat tail hinges

I'm about to start an entertainment cupboard in a fairly simple design and would like to use rat tail hinges, the type with the pennant shaped flat part. In browsing the web I've found a number of offerings but the prices are a bit shocking, going as high as $85.00 for a pair.  With four doors...

    Coffin clock

I'm looking for dimensions for a wall hung coffin clock like the ones made by Leonard Marschark. Does anyone know of a source for such dimensions? Thanks, Herman
