    Getting a pulley balanced

I have a Delta shaper motor pulley which is causing vibration.  I'd like to have it balanced.  I live in the Northern Virginia area:  can anyone recommend a service to perform this form me? Thanks John

    Newport Lowboy/Highboy drawer

In a Newport lowboy/highboy that I'm building, I'm using only a single runner (in the center) for the bottom two outboard draws.  I believe this is period correct.  Does anyone know what part of the drawer rubs on the runner?  Is it the bottom, or a strip applied to the bottom, or something...

Looking for wide poplar, Shenandoah Valley

I need some secondary wood for case projects, wide poplar, say minimum of 14 inches, preferably sawed thinner than 4/4.  Does anyone around the Shenandoah Valley/Northern Virginia area know of a source? Thanks Johnny D.

    Relative prices of period furniture

In 1760, John Goddard charged L 90 for a "scolloped tea table" and only L 60 for one of the fancy corner chairs. For those of you who've made both of these pieces, especially Al, since you've done it repeatedly:  Do those numbers make sense in terms of your experience of what it takes to build...

    Why, why, why?

I greet you now. I saw a photo of a blockfront case with thumbnail moulded lipped drawers.  Somebody here must have seen a piece like this.  Any of you guys ever try to do it?  It looks infernally difficult to get the lip to overlay the blade when the blade is shaped like it is.  Am I missing...

    Newport slipper foot?

I'm making test legs for my Newport slipper foot highboy.  Does anyone have any photos of one of these feet (preferably from a case piece)?  I don't know in detail how the foot is shaped.  My guess is that one draws some sort of lozenge shape on the bottom of the foot and cuts that out, but then...

    Hardware question

I will soon be installing chippendale pulls/backplates in an oxbow chest.  The pulls will be installed on a curved surface.  In order to get the flanges of the bail posts to seat cleanly the posts would have to be bored square to the face...i.e. the holes and the posts would be non-parallel and...

Where are the Newport export "red cedar" desks, etc.?

Where are the Newport export "red cedar" desks, etc.? In reading accounts of Newport cabinetmakers, such as described in Morrison Hecksher's book or Moses' book, I often encounter the description of the Newport cabinetmakers having had a vigourous export trade.  Many of these items were made in...

    Thumbnail profile on draw fronts

Under the category of "How'd they do it?" with acknowledgement of the many number of ways to tackle any problem: "How did they used to" form the thumbnail edge on drawer fronts, with particular respect to the problem of end grain?  Was this a common handplane?  I almost never see this kind of...

    cockbeaded case construction

I'm doing my oxbow case, which is cockbeaded, cockbeading applied to the case.  My question is about thickness of case side and cockbead moulding. Given data, 3/16 thick cockbead, 13/16 thick case side.  How deep would the rabbet for the cockbead be? Should it be flush with the inside? Thanks JD

    oxbow chest drawer fronts

I'm getting started on my oxbow bureau, and I want to solicit input from those who've seen originals.  Is it usual to have the backside of the drawer fronts follow the curve, or would they be straight. Thanks JD

    Oxbow chest

I'm going to start on oxbow chest inspired by that on p. 103 of Sack's Fine Points of Furniture: good better best, superior masterpiece.  I have two unknowns I'd like to request help with: 1.) How proud is the bulge? and 2.) Does the concave center recede behind the plane defined by the front...

    John Townsend secretary

I'm going to be building the desk made by John Townsend, as shown in M. Hecksher's excellent book.  Does anyone know of any drawings available?  The desk and bookcase are simple, not blockfront.  This appeals to me, as I'm not in need of the fancy one, on which I'm kind of burned out.  I've got...
