Furniture Institute of Massachusetts Closing and Selling all the Tools

Just got an email from FIM that they are closing and selling all of their tools. Hopefully it is because Phil wanted to and was not forced to. I took several classes there and really enjoyed them and learned a lot. It's a sad day for woodworking. Again, I hope this was Phil's decision to retire...

    Filling Holes in Walnut

All, I am in the process of making a Pennsylvania spice cabinet out of walnut and want to know what folks use to fill nail holes.  I have glued and nailed the crown molding at the top of the case and countersunk the nails.  I am wondering what is the best way to fill the holes for finishing...

    Bee Propolis in Wood Finishing

Hello all. I was recently watching a video on the FWW site regarding the Chicago School of Violin Making.  For the finish it was mentioned that a traditional finish for violins (in some cases) started with a coat of a propolis based sealer coat.  This coat added a nice patina to the final...

    Sources for Walnut around Atlanta

Peach State Members, I am having some issue finding a good source of walnut in Cobb County.  I have been to Atlanta Hardwoods and Sweetwater Hardwoods.  Both had a very limited amount and in my opinion low grade 8/4 walnut.  Does anyone have any other recommendations for hardwood in and around...

    Plane Iron Sharpening

I have been using the David Charlesworth method for sharpening hand planes (e.g. water stones, ruler trick, camber…).  I have a question about a new Lie Nielsen No 6 Fore plane.  David advocates a 33 degree main bevel and a 35 degree micro-bevel.  Would this be the same for the fore plane?  I am...

Thomas Elfe Double Chest in Charleston SC

My wife and I are planning a trip to Charleston over the 4th of July weekend.  I heard that there is a Thomas Elfe double chest in one of the museums in Charleston.  Does anyone know the name of the museum?  Also if there are other museums of interest for furniture makers I would appreciate the...

    Thomas Elfe Double Chest

Hi, I am planning on building the Charleston double chest on the front of the Samuel Humphrey book and had a couple of questions.  I think there are a few folks on the forum that have built this chest.  I saw some discussions on applying the fretwork.  My question is regarding the corners of...

Daniel Munroe Kidney Dial Shelf Clock

I was wondering if anyone has plans for or can point me to information about the Daniel Munroe kidney dial shelf clock.  I first saw a reproduction of the clock on Robert Millard's website (http://americanfederalperiod.com/munroe%20clock.html).  I bought plans for Robert's New York pembroke...

    Hardwood for Sale - Vermont

I have a couple or matched sets (cherry and walnut) that I bought at Irion Lumber about a year ago.  I am looking to sell them. Both sets are 3 board 5/4 wide matched sets.  The cherry set is nicely figured.  I have photos I can email to anyone that is interested.  Here are the details. Cherry...

    French Polishing

I have a couple of question regarding French Polishing and finishing in general.  I am about complete with a Seymour style table that a built in a class I took with Will Neptune last summer.  The table has turned mahogany legs, maple veneered (bricked) apron and a 4 panel book matched mahogany...

    Duncan Phyfe at the Met

Went to the Met yesterday for the Duncan Phyfe exhibit.  It was pretty impressive, as well as the rest of the American furniture exhibit.  No photographs allowed, even without a flash.  I never understand that...but I also pre-ordered the book from Amazon so I have photos of all the pieces.  The...

    Repairing Cracks In Crotch Mahogany

Can anyone share their tricks for repairing cracks in a crotch?  I have heard of using epoxy.  What type?  2-part?  Or are there other ways to seal the cracks and ensure they don't expand.  I would appreciate any information anyone can provide. Thanks, Brian

    Resawing wide crotch mahogany

I recently purchased a couple of beautiful pieces of crotch mahogany and was thinking about re-sawing them and how I would go about that task.  The 2 crotches are 21" wide, 45" long and 6/4.  I don't have a specific project in mind but was wondering about how I would maximize the use of these...

    Spring Joints

I have been hearing lately (although it sounds like it is nothing new) about using spring joints when edge gluing boards together for say a table top.  I saw Tommy Mac do it a couple of times on the Rough Cut show.  Once on his own and then once when Steve Brown from NBSS was a guest.  This...

Phil Lowe's - "Design and Drafting for Furniture" Class

Just finished Phil Lowe's week long class "Design and Drafting for Furniture".  Something I should have done LONG ago.  Phil starts you with the very basics and has you designing your own project by the last class.  I would highly recommend this class to folks who have not taken a...
