2024: Marion Smith

The SAPFM Cartouche Award Selection Committee has chosen Marion Smith of Atlanta, Georgia as the recipient of the 2024 Cartouche Award. thumb Marion Smith

Smith is one of the founders of the Peach State chapter and practiced law for forty years. Smith stated that he “accidentally” became a furniture maker after working on sailboats. He began making furniture for himself and to give away. He has an impressive portfolio and many have noted his expertise in finishing. He began taking classes in the early 1990s at Highland Woodworking in Atlanta and with his chapter beginning in 2010 when the chapter was formed. He has written for American Period Furniture (“On the Trail of Secret Formulas for 18th Century Finishes, 2013) and Pins & Tales (“Denatured Alcohol: I’m Not Going to Drink the Stuff, for Heaven’s Sake”, Summer 2015)

One of his pieces, a mahogany Philadelphia Secretary Desk was featured in the Member’s Gallery of the Winter 2013 issue of Pins & Tales and it can also be seen on the cover of the SAPFM membership brochure. In 2011 he began teaching other woodworkers at the Peach State Chapter and has also taught at the Woodworker’s Guild of Georgia, the SAPFM Florida Chapter and the John C. Campbell Folk School. The letters of recommendation received by the Cartouche Award Selection Committee unanimously praised his attention to detail, thorough research and willingness to share his knowledge and skill.

The award will be presented at a banquet this summer at the annual SAPFM Midyear Conference and the 2024 edition of American Period Furniture will feature an article written by him as well as a biography of his furniture work by John Ogilvie. We congratulate Marion Smith for this well deserved honor and look forward to seeing more of his work.

From John Ogilvie’s nomination letter:

“In summary, Marion Smith is highly educated, not just in his professional career, but more specifically in furniture building and finishing. His depth of knowledge in period furniture, his workmanship, and his practical manner make him the consummate period furniture maker. These attributes coupled with Marion’s warm friendly manner, teaching skills, and generous charitable nature make him a person I consider to be an excellent candidate for the SAPFM Cartouche."

Forum atmosphere and content restrictions

The SAPFM Forums are for the discussion of period furniture and construction practices. We require that you maintain respect for all users, organizations, and businesses. Personal attacks or derogatory remarks will result in loss of posting privileges.

Just like family reunions, discussions of politics, religious beliefs, and sexual content are prohibited. No discussions, references or links to these topics are permitted anywhere.

References to businesses and services should be limited to descriptions of personal experience only. The forums should not be used as a marketing tool.

Buying and selling of items, including offers to buy/sell, is restricted to forums clearly marked as sales venues. References and discussion of prior/completed transactions are permitted in any forum. Links to vendors who sell materials and supplies are permitted within the context of general discussions (i.e., not pure sales pitches).

Spam, redirects, business or personal promotion

Spamming of other users by any means is prohibited (including by using information obtained from this venue). Referral links or redirects are considered spam.

Posts may not be pure business promotion. There is certainly room for describing your skills or business acumen without crossing the line into using the Forums for personal profit. Moderators and Administrators will consider the intent of all user postings when determining if a particular post crosses that line.

Auto-renewal ensures that your membership never lapses. However, it does involve PayPal in the renewal process and that increases the likelihood of errors...

  • Memberships with online payments will be automatically processed by PayPal a few days before expiration (Note: all financial information is held by PayPal, not SAPFM).
  • Memberships with offline payments will automatically receive a payment invoice email 15 days before membership expiration.
  • Auto-renewal can be cancelled at any time.

Unfortunately, our membership software treats "auto-renew" memberships as a new type of membership, rather than as a renewal of your existing membership. So, if you change from a standard (manual renew) membership to an auto-renew membership then the system will create a new, separate membership for you. This means that you will have two active memberships.

However, every new auto-renew membership is reviewed within a day or so and we manually adjust the membership records to correct the situation.

An example might help: Let's say that you have a standard "Individual" membership that is due to expire on December 31.

  • You go into the website and renew your membership on October 1.
  • At this point, you have two active memberships.
    • The original "Individual" membership that expires on December 31.
    • The new, "Individual (auto-renew)", membership that expires on October 1 of next year.
  • This process sends an email to the website support staff.
  • Within a day or two, we will review the new membership and do two things to fix the problem.
    • First, we will adjust the expiration date of the new membership to December 31 (next year) so that you get the full benefit of your original membership (remember, you had 3 months remaining on the original membership).
    • Second, we will expire the original membership.

At the end of this process, you will have only one active membership.

If you get caught up in this software issue, or have any questions on membership, please contact  Membership Services [email protected].
